Skill level: Beginner
Prerequisite skills: None
Do you want an entry-level lesson on sewing and garment construction? Do you have a sewing machine but are uncertain how to use it?
Join us for a hands-on introductory course that will teach you the foundational skills needed to construct simple textile items including home goods and apparel. This class is perfect for the aspiring sewist who is curious to try sewing or the self-taught sewist who would like to increase their knowledge and technical skill set.
Only 6 places! *Registration Ends MAY 1, 2023 at Midnight.*
Students will work on Janome HD-3000 and School Mate 7330 straight-stitch home sewing machines and Janome and Babylock home sergers.
Students will:
Cut and sew a Reversible Bucket Hat (using a pattern by youtube sewist & designer Glory Allan!);
Learn sewing vocabulary, including sewing machine parts and apparel construction terminology;
Learn how to thread and operate a conventional sewing machine, including trouble-shooting common issues;
Receive instruction on how to read a commercial sewing pattern;
Learn basic techniques to create sewn products, including how to pin and cut fabric and order of operations for construction; and
Receive a complimentary sewing pattern for a bucket hat.
All sewing tools will be provided by Rightfully Sewn Academy and it's donors in order to promote and encourage a sustainable future in the fashion industry. We recommend bringing in 2 corresponding fabrics of your choice (yardage details will be emailed after registration; we recommend recycling old pieces of clothing, table cloths, curtains, or sheets!) -- the hat will be reversible and can be alternated for a fun, patchwork effect! Thanks to our donors, Rightfully Sewn has a limited selection of fabrics that may be used for your project.
Class will be taught by one of our Academy Instructors.
